Mission
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Sacramento and Northeastern California is a charitable nonprofit organization whose purpose is to grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
Through the last few years, the chapter has seen tremendous growth in the number of wishes granted. Current wishes cost an average $5,000. The Sacramento and Northeastern California Chapter grants approximately 250 wishes to local children each year.
Nationally, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America is the largest wish-granting organization in the world with 64 chapters nationwide.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Sacramento & Northeastern California was founded in 1983. Since that time, the chapter has granted more than 3,500 wishes. While the Foundation follows the policies and guidelines of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, it operates as a separate 501(c)3 organization. All funds raised by our chapter are used to fulfill our mission in the 24 Northeastern California counties we serve.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation traces its beginning to one boy’s wish. In 1980, a 7-year-old boy named Chris was being treated for leukemia. Chris dreamed of becoming a police officer. To lift the boy’s spirits, family, friends and members of the Arizona Department of Public Safety came together to make Chris’ dream come true. He received his own helmet, goggles, badge and a custom-tailored uniform. He even took a ride in a police helicopter. Chris’ mother and those who helped to grant his wish created the Make-A-Wish Foundation in his memory, enabling his legacy to live on. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is the largest wish-granting organization in the world with 64 chapters nationwide.
